Mobile Patrol vs. Onsite Security Guards: Which Is Right for Your Property?

Onsite guards offer round-the-clock human presence, but mobile patrols provide a more flexible option by using a patrol vehicle to cover multiple worksites during scheduled and unscheduled visits. The decision between onsite guards, mobile patrols or a combination of the two is often based on the level of risk at each worksite. Some security vendors also offer hybrid services, using a combination of personnel and technology.

Most property owners face the same conundrum when choosing a security service. Do you choose to have personnel stationed onsite at all times or go with patrols that pop in on a regular basis? As mentioned, the choice should be based on a number of factors including the level of risk and your budget. Let’s take a look at each option.

What Is Mobile Patrol Security?

With mobile patrol a trained guard in a marked vehicle covers your premises (plus other premises along the patrol route) at regular intervals during your shift. The timing of these checks can be randomized, making it impossible to know when the vehicle will appear. The guard checks doors, gates, lights, and all other points of entry and the surrounding areas for signs of forced entry or unauthorized activity, responding quickly to any alarms or concerns.

It’s a good fit for properties that don’t need someone standing watch but do need regular, visible checks. Our mobile patrol security service is designed to blend into your customer service, with friendly, professional guards who represent your business well.

What Are Onsite Security Guards?

Onsite (or static) guards stay at your property for the whole shift. They control access, spot and deal with problems, manage visitors and react right away since they’re already there. Depending on the site, that might mean a uniformed guard at a gate, a concierge security professional in a lobby, or a guard walking the grounds of a commercial property.

Side-by-Side Comparison
Factor Mobile Patrol Onsite Guards
Presence Periodic, visible visits Constant, on location
Response to incidents Arrives from the route Immediate, already on site
Access control and visitors Not included Yes
Deterrence Strong, but unpredictable timing Strong, continuous
Best for Lower-risk sites, after-hours checks, multiple locations High-traffic, high-value or high-risk sites
Cost Usually lower, because the patrol is shared across stops Usually higher, because one guard covers one site

Cost depends on hours, location and scope, so ask for a quote based on your actual property rather than relying on a rule of thumb.

When Mobile Patrol Is the Better Choice

Mobile patrol often makes sense when:

  • Your facility is typically empty during evenings and the greatest security threat is theft, vandalism, or trespassing
  • You need daily or weekly documentation of security patrol visits
  • You have multiple small facilities that do not require full-time guards
  • You want a visible security presence, but can’t afford to hire guards.
When Onsite Guards Are the Better Choice

Onsite guards are usually the stronger choice when:

  • You have to control access to a particular zone, for example, at the gate, in the lobby or inside the building.
  • The protected object is located in a highly populated area, there are many guests or tenants.
  • At the location, there is valuable equipment or inventory that requires round-the-clock protection.
  • There is a need for a specialist to directly interact with people.
The Hybrid Option

You don’t have to. Many facilities use onsite guards during the busiest or riskiest hours and mobile patrol the rest of the time. Adding CCTV monitoring and alarm response lets you cover gaps in between, with cameras watching the site and a team ready to respond.

A construction site, for example, may need an active guard force during active hours, but only need patrol guards at night with live cameras. For ideas, see our construction site security tips for BC and our construction security service.

Questions to Ask Before You Decide
  1. What is the real risk at my property, and when does it happen?
  2. Do I need someone to control access, or just to deter and observe?
  3. How quickly do I need a response if something goes wrong?
  4. Do I need written reports of patrols and incidents?
  5. Will my needs change with the season, an event or a construction phase?

Frequently Asked Questions
Is mobile patrol cheaper than an onsite guard?

Usually, yes, because the patrol vehicle serves more than one stop. It all depends on your risk and hours.

Can I switch from one to the other later?

Yes, in fact many of our clients begin with patrol and add onsite coverage when risk factors increase or the opposite occurs.

Can mobile patrol replace cameras or alarms?

Mobile patrol is best used in conjunction with electronic security devices such as cameras or alarm systems. This is because a patrolling guard can check that all systems are in place and functioning between the time that they are serviced.
